Details for Am Basteir
Am Basteir is one of the 3 munro peaks on the northern end of the Cuillin overlooking the head of Lota Corrie and collectivly with it's surrounding tops & peaks its known as "The Executor Group". It's appearance is awe aspiring and frighting and is probably the most recognisable peak by the strange rock protrusion (Basteir's Tooth - Top) on the western end of Am Basteir which can have comparison with the Inaccessible Pinnacle.
To the north of Am Basteir is an impressive corrie Coire a' Bhasteir (corrie of the cleft) which can be well seen from Sligachan and is the easiest approach route onto the pass between Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir called the Bealach Basteir. From Sligachan follow a path that crosses the Allt Dearg Mor & Allt Dearg Beag and just before Coire Riabhach a cairn marks the start of a path to the right up the lower section of the Pinnacle Ridge. Contiune on path upto bealach the path os faint in places and higher up simple scambling with good views of the Basteir Gorge to the right. From Bealach Basteir it's a long airy scamble along the eastern ridge which has steep exposed drops on either side. Just before the summit point there is an awkward 30 notch on the ridge which has to be negotiated.
Am Basteir can't be ascended by walkers that lack scrambling ability even the easiest ascent is tricky.
