Details for Beinn Dorain
Beinn Dorain is one of the most recognisable mountains in Scotland, as it's western slopes curves gracefully up from the A82, West Highland Way and West Highland Railway and is a truly welcoming site to the highlands of Scotland. The conical shaped summit is best viewed just to the north of Tyndrum where is rises dramatically over the railway around Auch. Beinn Dorain is quite a simple mountain with steep dropping flanks on all sides except the north where grassy slopes drop down to Coire a'Ghabalach. The summit ridge is marked with twin tops both marked with substantial cairns with the southern top being the actual summit point so don't mistake the northern top Carn Sassunaich for the actual summit.
The usual ascent is from the Bridge of Orchy heading under the bridge and through a gate onto open hillside ascending eroded path up the south of Allt Coire an Dothaidh which heads into Coire an Dòthaidh to the low point between two big crags, Creag an Sochach and Creag Coire an Dòthaidh. From here climb northern ridge onto Am Fiaclach, Carn Sassunaich and onto summit. Alternatively Beinn Dorain could be tackled from the south side from Auth which is extremly steep with crags that need to be avoided.
Beinn an Dothaidh is usually climbed on the same outing and is climbed from the pass between the two peaks.
