Details for Ben Alder
Ben Alder is the 25th highest munros and also one of the more remote ones in the highlands, situated between Lochaber and The Cairngorms. It rises high above the 20 km long Loch Ericht with the impressive north eastern corries giving a splendid roadside view from the village Dalwhinnie NN631799 some 19km away. From the west Ben Alder appears as vast plateau like mountain which indeed it is, but hidden are the complex corrie & ridges on the north-eastern flanks of the mountain dropping into Garbh Choire which holds snow well into eary summer. The summit point in on the north of Garbh Choire and is marked with a trig point which is sheltered by a cairned wall to protect it from north-westerly gusts.
Usual ascent of Ben Alder is from Dalwinnie on the north where cycle acess is avaiable upto Culra Bothy and it is to complete in a single day. Most people however prefer to split over a couple of days and use the bothy as a base camp. From here an ascent can be made up a choice of two ridges, "Short Leachas which involves scrambling and very steep or "Long Leachas" which is also steep but somewhat easier. Any walker should also check with Network Rail for permission to cross the railway line at Dalwhinnie if need be. Alternativly access is available from Benalder Cottage (Apparantly Bonny Prince Chalie spent time here hiding) situate at the southern end of Loch Ericht and from Corrour if staying at Loch Ossain SYH.
Just before the northern flanks of Meall an t-Slugain (on the north west of Ben Avon) lie an aircraft wreck of a plane (World War 2 Wellington Bomber)
