Details for Ben Challum
Beinn Challuim is often regarded as a smooth grassy hill mainly because these are the characteristics of the southern and western slopes which are seen by many people from the A82 road around Strath Fillan. However from the north it shows a more exciting form with a steep and rocky face overlooking the head of Glen Lochay< . Beinn Challuim is made up of three ridges, the broad grassy south west ridge descends to Strath Fillan and is used in ascents from there. The north west ridge is steep and rocky and descends to the Bealach Ghlas-Leathaid (575 metres) and then connects to the Corbett of Cam Chreag. Another ridge goes easterly, decending into Glen Lochay.
The most frequently used access route is from Kirkton Farm up past the graveyard and then cossing the railway line onto easy slopes up to the southern top (care needed in bad conditions) continuing north on ridge to the summit. An alternative route is via Glen Lochay onto the eastern ridge that is longer but more pleasent, taking the walker beneath several other munros en route to Ben Challum.
From the summit provides an excellent view point being a fairly central peak -
- on the north Bridge of Orchy Hills< and Western Peaks of Glen Lyon< , prominently Beinn Dorain< & Creag Mhor<
- to the east Glen Lochay< Hills, prominently Meall Glas<
- the southern hills are Crainlarich Hills<, with the main peaks being Ben More< & Cruach Ardrain<
- and the south western hills are The Tyndum Hills< with the largest peak being Ben Lui<
