Details for Ben Hope

Ben Hope originally named by the Vikings from the word hop which means bay. It's the most northerly Munro in Scotland and stands in isolation at the head of the south east end of Loch Hope. Ben Hope roughly forms a large triangular wedge with a great crag on the west & 2 lower shoulders to the south & northeast. The summit point is situated on north east of the summit plateau which rises above the small lochan Coir' a' Ghallaich on the east. The western flanks of this great northern peak drop steeply almost to sea level in two tiers one down to about 350m where Dubh Loch na Beinne feeds Loch Hope dropping the rest.

The usual route to the summit starts in Strath more, to the west of the mountain where a signpost marks the start following Allt-na-caillich which flows down through a gap in the west-facing crags. The route is steep, but well marked and not exposed and very well trodden and eventually leads onto the broad grassy summit ridge where a long line of cairns lead along to the summit point where the trig point marks the top. Alternatively access can be gained from the eastern side this is rare, as there is a wide expanse of heather-covered moorland with no roads in that direction giving it a much longer approach in. Approach from the north is not possible for walkers, as there is no path between the crags but there have been a number of climbs recorded.

Alpine flowers are abundant in season, although the ground is very rocky.

On a clear day the view from the summit includes the Pentland Firth, Loch Eriboll and the nearby mountains of Arkle and Foinaven. Also the summit can be viewed from the Orkney Islands.

Just south of the Allt-na-caillich on the Strathmore road is the Dùn Dornaigil Broch which is a pre Pictish fortification unique to the north of Scotland.

The number of registered munro-madness users who have climbed Ben Hope is Thirty-Three
