Details for Mayar

Mayar rises on the south-east of Glen Doll and is part of Mounth plateau with the summit just 2km to the west of Shank of Drumfollow and is marked with a small cairn at 928m (3045ft). The southern side of Mayar drops gently via grass slopes into Glen Prosen with a track which lead almost to the summit called Kilbo Path. By far the most immpressive feature of the hill is the northern flanks with "Corrie Sharroch" on the north east, and "Corrie Fee" on the north west which opens out on the south side of Glen Doll to form a wide amphitheatre.

Usual accent to the summit of Mayar is from the old hill path into Corrie Kilbo which then climbs onto the plateau by The Shank of Drumfollow which forms the grass shoulder between Corrie Kilbo and Corrie Fee. From this col climb just 2km westwards to reach the summit. From the summit point of Mayar it's only about an hours walk to the neighbouring munro Driesh on the east about 3km and 140metres drop in height, so this munro is almost alway climbed on the same outing. Alternatively the southern Prosen side is quieter, and a more gentle path (Kilbo Path) leads up slopes top the col between Driesh - Mayar , this however has a far longer approach from the nearest public road.

From the summit of Mayar you get excellent views across a large area including the Lochnagar Hills on the north, Glenshee to the west, and even out towards the North Sea on the east coast. On a particularly clear day you can truly appreciate The Southern Cairngorms dominating the north from this peak.

The closeness of Mayar to the city of Dundee makes them popular munros with locals; in many ways making them the Dundonian equivalent to Ben Lomond near Glasgow.

The number of registered munro-madness users who have climbed Mayar is Forty-Nine
