Details for Mount Keen
Mount Keen is the most easterly munro and is relatively isolated standing on it's own at the head of Glen Mark.
The summit has a shapely coned top with broad grassy ridges south from Glen Mark, north from Glen Tanar, and east to Braid Cairn. This shapely eastern summit point is one of the finer views in Scotland and is best viewed from NJ455006 on the Tillypronie - Dinnet road (A97) from where the summit rises grandly above the the woodland below.
Usuall access to the summit is from the pictureque Glen Esk which is the best way of climbing Mount Keen heading up Glen Mark taking the mounth route up a bulldozed track to about 670m from where a well constructed path is a simple walk onto the summit which is marked with a summit cairn. Alternatively the hills peak can be reached from the road by Glen Tanar House from where a rough road leads through pine forests. Just before the Sheil of Tanar (ruin) take a left up a bulldozed track leads upto about 590m from where a path climbs onto the stony granite summit.
By those content to simply add Mount Keen to their list of 3000ft plus peaks it's best to take a bike as there are good tracks from both north and south to cover distance faster. On a good day, there are excellent views of the Cairngorms to the north east, especially The Lochnagar Hills which can be seen on the east.
