Details for Sgurr Alasdair
Sgurr Alasdair is the highest peak of The Cuillin (Black Cuillin, and is the highest peak on Skye. It is situated just off the main ridge (southern section) opposite "The Great Stone Chute" from Sgurr Sgumain which also gives the easiest access onto the summit. It has a shapely summit which is the first on a ridge which extends to the south west over Sgurr Sgumain & Sron na Ciche. On the north is "The Great Stone Chute" and Sgurr Thearlaich which give access to the main ridge. Sgurr Alasdair is named after Alexander Nicolson who was the first to climb the peak in 1873 and was the Skye sheriff
On the west of Sgurr Alasdair is Coire Lagan which is one of the most magnificent and popular Cuillin corries. It contains a beautiful lochan which is surrounded by large stone chutes and dramitic crags all within easy access from Glen Brittle.
Usual access is from Coire Laggen via the campsite or Memorial hut and then by the Great Stone Shoot bealach onto a pleasant scramble up the eastern ridge. Alternatively access can be gained by the south-western ridge from the col between Sgurr Alasdair and Sgurr Sgumain which is the highest pass on the Cuillin.
As with other peaks of The Cuillin, a head for heights and good scramling skills are called for to access the summit. Like the rest of the range it is composed of gabbro.
The views from Sgurr Alasdair are unrivalled with views to numerous mainland peaks as far as Ben Nevis some 80km. With the sea views out to both Inner & Outer Heprides
