Meall nan Tarmachan is one of the easiest munros to reach due to a high level start point, but it is really just the start of a rocky ridge traverse of Tarmachan Ridge which is one of the most interesting in the Southern Highlands. The route only contains a single munro but also contains numerous tops with some impressive craggy faces.
Start from from a rough track that branches off the road to Glen Lyon approx half a mile north west from the National trust Visitor Centre where a disused quarry track branches from the road leading to Glen Lyon. From here a path leads up the grassy slopes to reach the southern end of Meall nan Tarmachan's ridge which then is traversed taking in all of the 4 hills. To descend you need to retrace your steps to a bealach between Beinn nan Eachan and Creag na Caillich where a cairn marks the way down. Head down quite steeply to the disused quarry track which takes you back to the start of the traverse.
On a good clear day expect extensive views
- To the east the view is constrained beyond Beinn Ghlas & Ben Lawers.
- On the north over to the Glen Lyons Horseshoe
- To the west are distant views over to Ben More and the Crainlarich Hills
- There are excellent view to the south of Loch Tay
